The signs have never been more favorable for the start of a real circular economy, and not just in the construction and real estate sectors. The European Union has ambitious plans to strengthen the circular economy as part of the Green Deal. A sustainable economy that emits fewer emissions and uses fewer resources needs a legal framework in order to be able to prosper in fair competitive conditions. One potential that has so far been neglected is technical building equipment (TGA). TGA systems and installations contain strategically and economically valuable raw materials, such as copper, aluminum, steel and rare earths, which at the same time cause high material-related environmental impacts, e.g. gray CO2 emissions (embodied carbon), due to energy- and CO2-intensive manufacturing processes and short replacement cycles within a building's life cycle. The topic of the circular economy is more relevant than ever. TGA includes all permanently installed technical facilities inside and outside a building that serve the functional use of the building. According to DIN 276, TGA is assigned to cost group 400 (technical systems). Studies show that the gray CO2 emissions of TGA materials can make up around 50% of the total gray CO2 emissions, especially in energy-efficient buildings. For types of use such as laboratory buildings or construction methods with a high proportion of wood, the relative share of TGA in terms of total gray emissions increases further. This means that the ratio of KG 400 can exceed 50%. It is noteworthy in this context that TGA usually only has a material mass share of around 1-4% of the entire building. In practice, the grey CO2 emissions of the TGA are taken into account using life cycle assessment calculation rules of certification systems based on DIN EN 15978 and other specific requirements, such as the DGNB and QNG systems, but this is done on a flat-rate basis using so-called TGA base amounts. However, detailed evaluations suggest that these amounts are set too low and therefore do not reflect the previously mentioned proportions of the TGA.Feedback geben
